1] Child marriage: Band, baja, barati to face the music

INDORE: The axe may now fall on pandits, bandwalas, wedding material suppliers and even caterers if they are found participating in child marriage. They better check the age of bride and groom or else they may end up landing in jail, says the district administration.

The district administration, in order to check child marriage, has issued a gag order to pandits, bandwalas and caterers. It has also instructed them to inform the administration about any child marriage and to avoid becoming a part of it.

A circular has been sent by district collector Raghvendra Singh to all the SDM before Akshay Tritiya when a large number of child marriages take place. The SDMs have been instructed to take punitive action against not just the parents and relatives, but whosoever participates in the marriage. They will be booked under the Child Marriage Prevention Act 2006.

“Pandits, bandwalas and caterers must first make sure that they are not becoming a part of any child marriage or else they will face action,” district programme officer of women and child welfare department Vishal Nadkarni said.


2]Finally, Scarlett will be laid to rest in the UK

PANAJI: British teenager Scarlett Keeling, whose death created a sensation after her scantily-clad body was found onAnjuna beach on February 18, 2008, can now perhaps finally rest in peace.

Her mother Fiona MacKeown will claim the body from the British coroner after arrangements are made for her funeral in Brandiworthy Devon, sources said.

“The British foreign office has given its clearance to the British coroner’s office to release Scarlett’s body,” Vikram Varma, Fiona’s counsel in Goa, told TOI.

After the controversy over the cause of her death, the first postmortem was followed by a second one at Goa medical college hospital in Bambolim. Months later in 2008, her body was flown to Britain, but had been kept in a mortuary at an Exeter hospital.

In Britain, coroner Dr Elizabeth Earland of Greater Devon requested a third pathology examination in 2009. Her family could not lay the body to rest as they were awaiting communication from the Goa authorities.


3] Class X girl foils rape bid, set afire

CHANDIGARH : A class X boy allegedly set his girl classmate ablaze after she foiled former’s advances made to her at her residence in Murtazapur village of Kurkshetra district on Tuesday afternoon. With more then 55% burns, the victim girl was rushed to Kurusketra’s private hospital.

Acting on the statement given by girl, police have started the investigations after registering a case of attempt to murder against boy, who is also a minor at Pehowa police station.

Sources said the incident took place during afternoon hours when her mother was away to Nilokherhi and she was alone in the house. In her statement to duty magistrate, the 14-year-old victim informed that the accused forced entered in her house.


4] Private tutor held for ‘raping’ minor




BERHAMPUR: Police on Wednesday arrested aprivate tutor in Ganjam district for allegedly kidnapping and raping a Class VIII student. The girl was a classmate of his elder daughter.

Hina Pradhan (38) of Ramchandrapur village inSheragada police station area was arrested by police from Berhampur railway station, while he was trying to go to Surat with the 13-year-old girl, IIC (Sheragada) P K Sahu said.

5] Girl raped, strangled by three teenagers



A minor girl was allegedly raped and subsequently murdered by three teenaged boys in Biswan area of Sitapur district on Wednesday. The accused were handed over to the police by the locals.

Sitapur Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Balendu Bhushan Singh said that 12-year-old Sarla of Akvapur village went missing from her house since last night.
